The term ‘repetitive strain injury’ refers to a number of different syndromes and disorders. All of the different types of injuries that fall under the category of repetitive strain injury are the result of overuse of a specific limb or digit. Most often, this overuse is caused by an individual’s occupation or favorite physical activity. Computer workers and assembly line workers are among the most common groups of people that fall victim to a type of repetitive strain injury. In this article, we’ll list some facts about the different repetitive strain injuries so that you can know more about the different disorders.
    • The first step in a plan of action for treating a case of a repetitive stress injury usually involves resting the affected area for a period of time. Doctors often recommend at least two weeks of down-time in which you avoid making any types of movements that may aggravate the condition. Splints may be used in order to limit the amount of motion that can occur.
    • One of the most important types of drugs for people experiencing repetitive strain injuries is non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. These types of drugs include ibuprofen and aspirin, and they work to reduce the symptoms of many repetitive strain injuries by reducing the inflammation and swelling of the affected area.
    • While the number of different repetitive strain injuries affect different parts of the body, more often than not, the symptoms are the same regardless of the location. Those with a repetitive strain injury will experience a loss of range of motion in the affected area, and may often experience feelings of numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation.
    • In some advanced cases of a repetitive strain injury, surgery may be necessary in order to correct the problem. There are many different surgical procedures that can be conducted in order to limit the pain and ease the symptoms of the repetitive strain injury, and the good news is that most of them are simple outpatient surgeries that are performed under general anesthesia. Very few of the repetitive strain injury correcting surgeries require an overnight hospital stay, and the successful treatment rates of the surgeries are quite high.
    • Physical therapy can be quite helpful in strengthening the muscles and ligaments of the body after undergoing some treatment for a repetitive stress injury. Speaking to a qualified physical therapist after your symptoms have abated can be a good move in preventing the problem from occurring again in the future.
Hopefully, this article has taught you some things that you didn’t know about the various repetitive stress injuries that exist. These problems plague a large portion of society, but luckily, most of them are easily treatable and they are not chronic problems. If you think that you may be victim to a type of repetitive stress injury, the first step that you should take would be talking to your doctor. While some at-home treatments may be beneficial to abating the problem, speaking to a doctor can help to clear up the best type of treatment for your particular problem.
