Having an eating disorder is difficult on many levels because eating disorders are complex and difficult to treat conditions. The problem of living with an eating disorder is only further compounded by the occurrence of pregnancy. Although women with eating disorders tend to be less likely of becoming pregnancy, it is still a possibility that raises several important health concerns. When a woman is suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder become pregnant, there are several important steps that need to be taken in order to protect the health of both mother and the child. Here are seven important considerations and steps that need to be taken into account if an eating disorder patient becomes pregnant.

    1. Always remain honest and open with your family doctor about your eating disorder. If your physician is not already aware of your eating disorder, tell them as soon as you learn that you are pregnant. Although many eating disorder patients are ashamed of their condition, the importance of telling your doctor cannot be stressed enough. The health of you and your child may be put at a high risk if this information is not communicated to a doctor.

    2. Get all available prenatal care, including supplemental care as a result of the eating disorder. Women with eating disorders are at a much higher risk of suffering from several serious health complications. You may require supplemental prenatal care as a result of your eating disorder. Check with your physician and be vigilant about you and your child's health. If you think that something is wrong or you are having trouble taking care of yourself, seek counseling and medical attention as soon as possible.

    3. Visit a nutritionist. As previously mentioned, supplemental healthcare is often necessary for eating disorder patients who are expecting. Consulting a professional nutritionist is often required for many eating disorder patients to ensure that you stay healthy and at a reasonable weight. Working with a nutritionist can help you create a specialized plan that will help you consume the right kinds of foods and nutrients that will keep you and your child healthy throughout the course of pregnancy. Many patients find that it is valuable to continue nutritional treatment even after giving birth.

    4. Visit your local eating disorder support group. Visiting with an eating disorder support group is a wonderful way to get connected to people who know exactly what you are going through. This type of support is very powerful and it can help get you through difficult periods, particularly the challenges that one faces during the course of pregnancy.

    5. Visit a prenatal exercise case if your doctor approves or recommends one. Prenatal exercise is a wonderful way to stay healthy and active throughout your pregnancy. The beneficial effects of regular exercise can be especially valuable during the period of pregnancy. Only enroll in one of these classes if your doctor recommends it to you as a way to stay healthy, both physically, mental and spiritually.
