Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States as well as many other industrialized nations. There are many different medications that can be of merit when it comes to preventing or treating a case of heart disease, and in this article, we'll give a basic overview of some of the drugs that are used for heart disease, explaining what they are as well as how they can help.

One type of drug that is of merit for heart disease as well as many other problems is simple household aspirin. If you've already experienced a heart attack, doctors have probably recommended that you take aspirin regularly in order to reduce your risks of having another one.

Beta blockers are another type of drug that are useful for helping those with heart disease. Beta blockers work by making the heart beat a little bit slower, causing high blood pressure to be alleviated and also helps to reduce chest pain and prevent heart attacks.

Nitrates are a different form of drug that works by relaxing the blood vessels of the body, which helps to ease chest pains such as angina. One type of nitrate that is commonly used for those with heart disease is the chemical known as nitroglycerin.

Calcium channel blocking drugs are also used for cases of heart disease. Like nitrates, calcium channel blockers help the body's blood vessels to relax, which helps those with high blood pressure and chest pain to feel some form of relief.

Blood cholesterol lowering drugs can be very useful in helping to keep heart disease at bay. Doctors have consistently stated that people who have a level of cholesterol that is lower than 150 are very safe when it comes to the threat of a heart attack. For that reason, a healthy diet coupled with cholesterol reducing drugs and an exercise program can be one of the most effective ways of reducing pain and risks associated with heart disease.

Thrombolytic agents are a type of drug that are used to treat a very specific aspect of heart disease. They are used to help break up the blood clots that are present in the coronary artery in advanced cases of heart disease which can be of major benefit to alleviating the condition.

Diuretics are a type of 'water pill' that cause frequent urination, lessening the fluids present in the body. These pills are useful in eliminating high blood pressure which can seriously increase the risk of mortality when heart disease is present.

Now that you know more about the different types of drugs that can be helpful in treating heart disease and its various symptoms, you'll be better suited to understanding your options when speaking with a doctor about heart disease. Before beginning any types of medication, be sure to discuss them with your doctor in order to determine if they are the right decision for you. Your health is your responsibility, so be sure to be cautious and preventative when it comes to the health of your heart.
