Back pain can be excruciating. It's an affliction that affects many people throughout the world, and it can cause you to feel unable to move. There are many things that can contribute to a case of back pain, and having poor posture is one of them. In this article, we'll offer some tips to help you learn how to keep good posture so that your chances of becoming a victim to back pain are lessened.

One area where a lot of people have trouble maintaining their posture is when they are sitting down. There are some habits that you can learn that will take some of the stress away from your lower back while sitting. For one, you should always rely on the back of the chair for support. Slouching and leaning forward can result in additional strain, so it should be avoided. If you regularly sit in a chair for a long period of time at work, be sure to purchase a chair that is ergonomically designed for back support. Another aspect that few consider is how your arms sit while you are in a chair. Proper posture dictates that your arms should be bent away from your body at an angle that is somewhere between 75 and 90 degrees at the elbow. Also, your knees should be even with your hips while sitting, if not slightly higher. Both of your feet should be planted flat on the floor. Keep your shoulders straight, and be sure to not sit for too long of a period. For extended periods of sitting, be sure to take breaks to stretch and walk around for a minute.

Keeping good posture while standing is also important to prevent back pain. You should keep your weight mostly on the balls of your feet, not the heels. Also, your feet should be placed slightly apart. Try to line up your ankles with your shoulder blades to get the proper distance. Your arms should hang as they would naturally, and you should do your best to avoid locking your knees. Your chin should be slightly tucked in order to keep your head's weight level and balanced. The head should be directly above the neck and the spine, without being pushed forward. Do your best to stand as erect as possible, being sure to keep your shoulders in an upright position. In cases in which you have to stand for a long period of time, be sure to change up where you are focusing your weight from time to time. One method of doing this is by rocking your weight from your heels to your toes. To diagnose exactly how efficient your standing posture is, try lining yourself up and standing directly next to a wall. In proper posture, your posterior, your shoulders, and the back of your head should all be touching the wall.

By following these tips, you can correct problems with posture and thereby make it easier for your back to operate. In this manner, you are less likely to suffer from problems with back pain, and your posture will be more cosmetically pleasing as well!
