A lot of patients with Hepatitis C, especially those suffering chronic Hepatitis C do have side affects that are psychological rather than physical, many patients feel denial, anger, depression, anxiety, loneliness and stress.

Many patients will feel wronged when they find out they have Hepatitis C, and a large proportion are shocked at how dramatically their lifestyles will be changed by what the doctors require them to do.

Other people feel helpless, they find it hard to deal with the emotional distress of finding out they have a lifetime condition that will deteriorate over the coming decades.

    The emotional affects

There are many reasons why people suffer with a wide variety of emotional side affects to suffering with Hepatitis C; most of these are for the following reasons.

Anger – Anger is a very common emotion that patients with Hepatitis C suffer with, this can be because they don’t know how they became infected, how they managed to be infected and not know about it or angry about the physical affects changing their body.

Depression – Some people become depressed as they let their sadness of being infected overcome them. The affects of depression are tiredness, guilt, feeling worthless, sleeping more and lack of concentration.

Anxiety – The anxiety of the unknown, not knowing how the affects of Hepatitis C will take its toll on their body.

Stress – Everyone deals with stress in his or her own way and some people get more stressed than others. Most people feel a huge weight on their shoulders by finding out their infected and that they will spend a long time growing to manage a new lifestyle.

Loneliness – Suffering with an infection like Hepatitis can make people feel lonely, even though they have many people around them. Imagine suffering with a virus you know nothing about and that no one else around you has knowledge of.

    The medication affects

Interferon is one of two main medicines taken to alleviate the symptoms of Hepatitis C, but there are side affects to Interferon that some sufferers may become depressed, some people may even have suicidal thoughts.

Psychological affects that are caused by Interferon are a huge issue because many patients do not wish to get treatment, which makes them a danger to themselves. The reasons why they don’t wish to get treatment are because they let the depression consume them.

Those who have had a previous psychiatric illness are at the greatest risk and have to be closely monitored by medical experts and family members because they are the most likely to suffer from suicidal tendencies.

    Coping with Hepatitis C

It is a trying and emotional time to find out you have an infection that will last a lifetime. With a lot of support from medical experts, family and friends those who suffer with Hepatitis C and psychological affects because of it can find a coping mechanism.

You have to remember Hepatitis will be with you, but does not have to rule you, if you manage it correctly you will be able to live a relatively normal life.
