Clinical depression is a problem that much of the world faces. It's a problem that we're all familiar with, and much attention is paid to it. Postpartum depression is another serious form of depression that is often cast by the wayside. In this article, we'll discuss what postpartum depression is, as well as what treatments are used in order to remedy it.

-- Postpartum depression affects a large number of women post child-birth. A vast majority of women find that they are at least somewhat 'moody' after a pregnancy, with approximately eighty percent of women reporting that they experience some discontent. Postpartum depression is a more extreme case of depression which affects a significantly smaller portion of the population. Different studies place a woman's likelihood of developing a case of postpartum depression after pregnancy at between five and twenty five percent. It's a problem that is hereditary in it's nature, and women who experience intense bouts of PMS are more likely to develop a case.

-- There are many different causes that doctors contend are the reason that people experience postpartum depression. Women who experience depression while they are pregnant are significantly more likely to face postpartum depression than those who do not. Low self esteem is another common cause for postpartum depression, as well as stress regarding the care of the child or life in general. Being a single parent or having a case of depression in the past also put a woman at more of a risk of developing postpartum depression.

-- Although many people think that women are the only ones who can suffer from a case of postpartum depression, the truth is that men can also experience symptoms of the affliction.

-- When it comes to treating a case of postpartum depression, many doctors use the same means that they would when treating a case of normal depression. That means that therapy may be helpful in easing the symptoms, but it also may be necessary to resort to a form of medication to remedy the problem. Most often, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, are prescribed. These pills work to help keep the serotonin levels high in the brain, as serotonin is a type of neurotransmitter that highly relates to one's happiness.

-- Postpartum psychosis is another problem to be considered when assessing one's risks post pregnancy. Postpartum psychosis causes one to feel completely out of touch with reality, usually occurring within two weeks post-birth. It's a problem that needs to be treated immediately for any positive effect to be seen. If not properly diagnosed, the problem may not go away for many months.

-- Now that you know more about the causes and the solutions to a case of postpartum depression, you'll be better suited for dealing with it should it occur in your life. Few people remember to consider their own health in the hectic period of time in which their main focus is upon the health of their infant, so be sure to be informed about the possible mental side effects that having a child can produce.
